What do you do when you want a better life but nobody around you has ever shown you how to get there?

Growing up in poverty, without mentors, financial stability, or successful role models, can make success feel like something reserved for other people. You have big dreams, but no blueprint. You want to escape your circumstances, but you don't even know where to start.

In this episode of Failures Podcast, Rich and Justin reflect on their journey from working together at Whole Foods in their early twenties to building careers, chasing opportunities, and finding a way beyond the environments they grew up in. What started as conversations about music, business, and self-improvement in a grocery store freezer became a friendship built on ambition, accountability, and the belief that life could be different.

Rich opens up about growing up on welfare, not having a father or mentor to guide him, filing for bankruptcy at 19, and struggling to believe someone from his background could ever graduate college or build a successful career. Together, they explore how hip-hop, audiobooks, friendship, and exposure to different environments helped them develop the confidence to pursue opportunities they once thought were impossible.

This conversation explores breaking generational cycles, overcoming a poverty mindset, finding motivation when you feel stuck, building self-belief without role models, and taking the first steps toward changing your life even when you have no idea what you're doing.

Because sometimes the hardest part of making it out isn't the work. It's believing that someone like you can actually do it.

If nobody gave you a reference point, become one.
